Hi everyone,

I've been working on my stash lately.  I try to do it every year or so - pull everything out and separate it into three piles:

  1. I love it, don't know what I'm going to do with it but I'm keeping it & I may never cut into it but that's ok.
  2. Hmmmm, I like it but don't know what to do with it
  3. What was I thinking?

The third pile gets donated.  In my ruthlessness to cull my stash, I've made the local schools, pillowcase project, Girl Scouts and Project Linus very happy over the years.  I'll admit, pile two usually all goes right back on the shelf with pile one.
My friend Karen Montgomery of The Quilt Company suggest cutting pile #2 up into 10" squares, 2 1/2" strips and 5" squares.  She says that you can find thousands of patterns that use those cuts and make gorgeous quilts.  Karen suggests making use of one of these frigid days to cut that pile up into something usable.  Separate them by color and a quilt will start to magically appear!  Don't forget to keep a few of those 3+ yard pieces for borders on the gorgeous quilts you're going to be making!

Ok, ok, I admit to having a piles of UFOs and planned projects stuck in with the
stash.  I'm getting better at asking myself if I'm really going to finish a UFO (why did I think my brother would like that color combination???) and if I really need to make ALL of the 7 purses I have fabrics, notions and patterns stacked neatly together?

How's your stash coming?  Under control or out of control?

New in the shop:

All A Flutter - 11 bolts from Hoffman that shout SPRING!  Click here for details.

New bright colored scissors!  Great for snipping threads while sewing.  Click here for details.  Do you know the legend behind stork scissors?  They were actually a tool used by midwives in the 1800s & kept in their sewing baskets for use while the mom was in labor - hence the stork!

We have the Potato bag supplies!  Everyone who has tried these, swears by them so I whipped one up for the shop and another to include in my future daughter-in-law's bridal shower present.  I love the potato fabric and am going to try to whip up some potholders with it for her too!  Click here for the fabric and the special batting in a kit that makes two bags!

New Cuddle fabric came in!
Owls and whales!  Click here for the whales and here for the owls.

Debbie's Weekly Quilting Tip - Nancy Zieman passed this tip along in a class I took from her - When making a bag or purse, I beef up the weight of thin fabrics by inserting a layer of cotton duck or canvas between the lining and outer fabric.

Linda Hahn will be teaching from her new book New York Beauties Simplified at QP!  Linda will show you how to make this block with only one pin!  Thurs, Feb 24 10:30-3:30.  Click here to register.

Enjoy your weekend and stay warm!

Feb 4, 2011

Is it spring yet???  I'm ready for the snow to be gone and the crocus to start popping up.  I've seen robins here at the Jersey Shore the past few weeks.  They're either VERY confused or they're overwintering here in the Pinelands.  I'm betting they wish they went all the way to Florida.

I'm working on the shop hop quilt - think butterflies with lots of embellishing - and also this bright floral table runner that's whole cloth and just needs quilting.   Simple, simple!  I tried a new to me free motion pattern on this and I like the way it came out.  Check out the kit here.

Those of you within driving distance to the shop - remember:

  1. Our annual Super Bolt Sale is this weekend!  Hundreds of bolts in the classroom will be $5 per yard, one yard minimum cut, you must leave us 1 yard or take the remaining amount.
  2. Our Machine Inventory Reduction Sale is still going on with some great buys left.
  3. HandiQuilter classes with Debby Brown are the last weekend of the month and are filling quickly so don't delay!  I think there are only three more spaces left in both of Sunday's classes.
  4. There's still time to make the Football Easy Stripe Table Runner for Sunday's party!   Click here for details.

Easy Stripe Table Runner Baseball!  We received some new striped fabrics this week and the baseball is one of them.  Click here for the kit.  We also received stripes with watermelon, daisies, and raspberries to join the football, cupcakes and lemon ones already in stock!

Debbie's Weekly Quilting Tip - When possible press your blocks and quilt rows in opposite directions. Then when you piece the blocks into rows the opposing seams just nestle together and the seams match up and there is no bulky seam to sew over! A little bit of planning can make nestling your seams SO much easier!

Are you taking part in Quilting Is Murder? It's not too late to join the fun and it's free - click here to start reading the mystery and join the fun! We're thrilled to be one of the killer shops! I think I've figured out who the killer is - have you?

Join us on Facebook! I post all the new things that come into the shop, weather closings, and other things I think you might find interesting.

Enjoy your weekend!
